Program Description: New York’s changes to debt collection laws, in addition to existing federal laws, can be confusing. The shorter time frame to collect consumer debt can impact internal firm efforts and creates a need for quick decision-making and action to avoid surrendering the ability to enforce the right to payment.
This course will address how firms are working within these time frames, accelerating collection efforts, and extracting small payments to extend the time to collect, as well as the potential risks and benefits. Accountants will leave with an understanding of the laws and how to navigate internal and external debt collection efforts to maximize recovery.
Learning Objective: New York State laws governing the collection of consumer debt continue to change. Participants will leave this presentation with a concrete understanding of the recent changes to New York debt collection laws and their impact on the ability to collect fees from consumer clients.
